Mali is an ethnically and culturally diversified
country that may be likened to a colorful rainbow. Broadly
speaking, there is Arab and Berber culture in the north, Sudanese
culture in the center, and Mandinka culture in the south.
Mali fosters diverse ethnicities, races and cultures, and
all ethnic groups coexist while maintaining their own cultural
identity and values.
There is a custom in Mali known as "Sananguya",
passed down through the generations in the different ethnic
groups, which says that we should not dominate but support
one another while laughing and joking, irrespective of the
place or circumstances. Japanese textbooks cite the efforts
of Malians to build friendly interpersonal relations as an
example of a culture that places importance on greetings.
Mali's hospitable culture is also a historically renowned
fact.
In addition to this ethnic stability, Mali has enjoyed a long
period of political stability, and is a country that one can
feel relaxed about visiting, whether for sightseeing, business
or research purposes. Emphasis in recent years has centered
on improving and solidifying the tourism and business environment
in particular, and commercial laws have been enacted to facilitate
foreign investment, as part of the process of setting up a
most attractive environment for foreign investors.
Until now there has not existed a formal means of introducing
the Republic of Mali to people in Japan or of communicating
the varied opportunities that the country offers. The creation
of this website, coinciding with the establishment of the
Malian Embassy in Japan, aims to convey the reality and potential
of Mali to people in Japan. I hope that the website arouses
interest in and deepens respect for Mali, and provides the
occasion for people to visit. Those requiring further details
should feel free to contact the Embassy directly.
